  1. “There is some debate happening about whether or not the events of Jan. 6 constitute a failed coup attempt. We need to be clear. This had the very real potential to destroy this government. These things often move beyond what may have been envisioned by those who set them in motion, through the actions of the participants. Had they actually managed to get hold of a member of Congress, or the Vice President, it would only take one person in the passion of their frenzy to decide to kill them for the rest to realize that there was no turning back from further violence and death. We were, and remain that close. These people are not going away. They will return to state houses and the Capitol. They have been shown that they can do so with impunity.
  2. That must change, but it won’t be quick or easy. The FBI warned in 2015 that law enforcement and the armed forces were riddled with white supremacists, and we saw the result on Wednesday.
  3. This was indeed an attempted coup. And those who took part learned lessons for the next round. I hope that the rest of us do as well, for I fear and expect that they will be back.”
